I’m a member of the Screen Actors Guild… yes you may have heard about the possibility that SAG will strike. I do have thoughts on that, but that’s a long post which I’ll write later in the week. FYI…I DO NOT WANT A STRIKE. No one does, especially in this Economy.
Anyway, one of the perks of being a guild member is going to free screenings of new releases, and I took my parents this past weekend to see Gran Torino, starring/directed by Clint Eastwood. The film, written by newcomer Nick Schenk, is about a racist, retired autoworker, who learns about tolerance as he encounters a Hmong family next door and slowly learns to let go of his prejudices, one day at a time. This is the type of film that would’ve never gotten produced without a star, but I’m glad it did get made.

Seeing people onscreen that share your struggles, or even look like you, does something for your psyche. Growing up, I only saw stereotypes on film and TV, and the kids now are lucky to have youtube, and the ever-growing multi-cultural casts on various mediums.
The reason why I love the movies really comes down to the stories. Escape. Human Psyche. The commonality that we all share to love, be loved, to be acknowledged, the desire for fame, success, and to understand why we’re even on this earth.
I guess that’s why I’m still plugging away. Crazy as it may seem sometimes. Anyway, check out this film. Clint Eastwood is hilariously honest, even when he’s spewing racist tirades. You feel sorry for him, and you start to sympathize with his character. Now, that’s acting.
