I work for Myspace Entertainment and also Myspace Karaoke at the moment. We had a karaoke outing not too long ago, and this is what happened. Yup. I rocked out Missy Elliott’s “Work It.” Shout out to Andrea Carpo for taping this..she just sent me this link. I am such a freak, but I’m a fun freak. Woo hoo! Hip Hop Karaoke is so bomb.
TGIF! And as I sit here doing work and feeling sick from too much vino, I wanted to post some pics from last night’s karaoke outing with Jessica, Andrew, and other folks from MySpace Karaoke/Music. As well as my amazing comedy friends..a special shout out to Jann Hoffman, who is quite possibly the coolest person on this earth as she broke it down when Snoop Dogg came on. Literally, the entire bar was cheering for her…she’s awesome. Anyway, here’s the latest Old Skool Hip Hop Playlist from the MS Karaoke blog, and without further ado…
So.. I recently realized that one of my strange obsessions, karaoke, has played an integral role in me working with MySpace Karaoke. Usually when I mention this obsession to people at parties or getting coffee, they look at me and go,
“Oh, well, you’re Asian.”
TRUE. But I also love music. Huge fan of all genres, especially hip hop and R&B. I’m excited to interact with all the MySpace Karaoke users and of course, finding new talent online. Check out my first post on the official site for ‘Top 6 Karaoke Tips.”
So you may think that Karaoke is just for weirdos like myself, but I always meet a bunch of really cool and NORMAL folks who love to get up on stage and sing their hearts out. Most recently, I met a bunch of guys, graduates of the prestigious Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, who proceeded to let me know that karaoke is “Da BOMB,” and that they used to frequent various bars in Philly to get their karaoke fix on.
Of course, I took video footage. HOLLA. By the way, I had to shout during the interview because it was so noisy at the bar.
I was reading this LA Times article about the “Glee” panel at this year’s Comic-Con. Apparently…they used two KICK-ASS songs in the next episode. Can’t wait!!
I did a bit of singing recently. If you’re a regular reader of my odd blog, you probably know that I think that singing/karaoke is the best thing ever. Here’s one song that I rocked out recently… “Lean on Me.”
And Beatles “Let it Be.” Sometimes you just need to sing the classics!!!
I did a massive amount of singing this weekend, and it was ridiculously fun. I mean, being able to grab a mike and break it down to old skool hip hop or R&B song, or even some sort of 90′s rock ballad. That’s classic!
I also ended up going to karaoke at a friend’s party and we got a private room in K-town. There was a mixed crowd in the bunch, so I thought I’d re-post some of my mantras if you ever find yourself in a karaoke spot/room. Note: Try to bring someone Asian as they’ll be able to speak the language and make for a pleasant experience.
Here are some things to remember:
Don’t Let the Random Background Videos confuse you- In private Korean karaoke spots, your song will play and there will usually be Korean dramas playing on the TV. Don’t be confused, scared, or weirded out. This is just the way it is, so enjoy the random videos of Asian couples who walk in the countryside.
Beware of the Quiet, Shy One- Yeah, at karaoke, there’s always that one quiet, shy person who claims to never have done karaoke. Um, yeah, then an hour later, they’re totally hogging the machine. haha…
Service- In Korean spots, this means they’ll give you something for free. Again, if you bring an Asian person, they will work it out.
Be courteous- In these spots, if you’re not Asian/Asian-American, you will probably feel odd, but hey, just have fun, kick back, and sing. The point is to make a fool out of yourself and have fun. It’s okay, you can rap Biggie, sing like Bon Jovi, or pretend that you’re Britney Spears in her “Oops, I did it again, days.”
Now, the karaoke bars where you go up and perform in front of a bunch of strangers, that’s a whole other post which I’m diligently working on. This is karaoke, you know. Serious stuff. Don’t mess, yo.
Oh, and BTW, this is a GREAT song to dance/sing to. It also puts you in a good mood which ya know, is necessary in times like these. Here In Your Arms by Hello Goodbye
I’m going to the “Mother of All Karaoke Christmas Parties,” tonight at the Roxy. So excited, as I love to sing/rap/make a fool of myself. Will remember to take cool pics of tonight, and apparently it will be webcast..uh.
And here’s an hosting video I made earlier in the year… an Oldie but goodie. This was shot at the Brass Monkey, and apparently Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy goes here and sings as various characters from the show. Need to see that in person.
Yo. My name is Kat Ahn, and I started this blog to maintain my sanity while working at a tech start-up. Who am I? A Philly-born Actress/Writer/Performer. A former people pleaser who has a penchant for drawing bad stick figure cartoons and rapping spoof songs. Did I mention my parents' own a cheesesteak shop called Boo's? True story.
