First Recording on APM’s Marketplace Commentary

December 26, 2011 in comedy, LA, Life

Thanks to all of you who’ve e-mailed me, sent me tweets @kathrienahn, and let me know that this story inspired you in some way, shape or form. I was really psyched to record this piece for NPR’s Marketplace (Thanks Nancy Farghalli!) and more importantly, it’s made me want to be a better actress, writer, and comic.

It’s weird that with the holidays over and 2012 on the horizon, I feel like my life outlook has changed a lot. I’ve learned a crapload about life, but there’s so much that I don’t know jack about. Which is what I’ll probably explore with my writing and comedy.

And if you’re going through some tough shit in your life, just know that THINGS DO GET BETTER. Figure out how to deal with your situation in a positive way even when things seem really bleak. Uh..trust me, my life is not perfect now, but I have things to be happy about now. I’m not a bible thumper, but prayer, running, and writing jokes have gotten me through many tough times. Maybe it’ll do the same for you.

Oh, and to all you peeps who’ve visited me at Boo’s Philly Cheezsteaks and Hoagies, thanks for being so cool. And if you wanna listen to the NPR piece, I’ve embedded it below. :) (P.S. Things are getting better for my family since the piece aired. In case you were wondering)

Who is Da Boo?

December 5, 2011 in LA

Hola. :) Just updated the Boo’s Philly Cheesesteaks/Hoagies website. Do you like?!! Also, Boo is the name of my late grandma who used to make me walk to CVS to get her favorite chocolate so that we could watch Korean dramas together on Saturdays. She was a cheesesteak/hoagie lover who would tell me that I needed to improve my cooking/cleaning skills in order to move forward in life. Uh… Well, those aren’t my strongest skills, but my gram was da bomb. I miss her and think she’s looking down on us thinking,
“Hey, make sure you save some Tastykakes for me.”

Happy Thanksgiving and Boo’s Soft Opening…

November 25, 2011 in Food, Food Reviews, LA, Life

hey you guys! First, just wanted to wish you a happy belated Thanksgiving which is quite possibly my favorite holiday EVER. I mean, since the days when I used to make paper mache turkeys in 4th grade and Adam S. used to eat our table’s Elmer paste and thus I wasn’t able to create the proper turkey. See, as you can tell, I don’t carry long-term grudges. :) HA.

Anywayz, just wanted to show you my mom’s Thanksgiving centerpiece from church and also some pics from the Boo’s Philly Cheesesteak opening today. Thank you to everyone (friends/family/customers) who came out and we’re down to do it all again for @shopsmall biz tomorrow. Really awesome!

Feel free to follow Boo’s on Twitter and like them on FB.

Dudes/Gals, I’m tired and in need of some vino. Or perhaps a shot… :) (Thanks Geraldine/Eric/Dillon..love you guys!!!)

2009…Now Things Make Sense

October 9, 2011 in Influencers, inspirational, LA

I wrote a blog post in 2009 about how I used to continuously watch Steve Jobs’ Stanford Commencement Speech because I was so close to giving up my dreams/goals. Things were bleak in my work and personal life, and the best option seemed to be to just quit. Take the easier path. Save some money. Buy myself a designer bag. But deep down, I knew that this wasn’t an option.

Sometimes you have to ask yourself if you’d rather swim in comfort or almost drown by doing what you want to do, or at least trying to figure out what it is that you want to do.  This speech helped me a ton. This past week was full of touching, emotional tributes to one of the greatest geniuses of our time, Steve Jobs, for his inventions. And one thing I respected about Jobs was that he was a doer, not a talker. No BS.

Seeing all the tributes to him helped me really see that when you bounce from this planet, people will remember you for what you did for others. How you made them feel. If you made them laugh or cry. Something to think about.  RIP Steve Jobs. Thanks for helping me not quit my dreams and find the courage to follow my heart.

Reality…er…Rocks? Well…

April 10, 2011 in hollywood, LA

Well hello there. I haven’t blogged in a minute, or a week, but hey, whose counting? :) I had to cover this ‘Reality Rocks’ event for work and had a couple interesting photo opportunities that I thought I’d share.

First, I had to get a coffee and came across this HUGE RICE KRISPIES treat. I’m still thinking about it…

The Myspace booth

Then I met this lady who turned out to be Frenchie from VH1′s ‘Rock of Love.’ I had no clue who she was, but she kept telling me she was famous. Hence the pic. All I could think was…whoa, homegirl is TAN and your dog better not attack me!

Randomly bumped into Ani Phyo, Eco-lifestylist and Raw Food Author. She is so sweet!!! And gorgeous in person. I felt guilty for eating meat when I talked to her though.. Veganism doesn’t agree with me.

And I LOVE Michael Maloney from ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.’ This show always makes me cry like a huge baby. I’m serious.

Then, I had to get a bunch of kids to wear these Myspace badges. They were like, “Who is this random person talking to me?”

And nothing ends a Reality TV expo like some hand sanitizer! Especially when you randomly brushed past Ron Jeremy. Again, I’m serious.

Oh Snap! It’s Fergie Ferg!

March 11, 2011 in Acting, comedy, Events, hollywood, LA

Ummm…I met Fergie Ferg last night at the Chin Chin restaurant for an event for the “Look Like You Give A Damn” project sponsored by Nivea for Men. Josh Dumael and Fergie showed up to support their trainer, Don Brooks, who unveiled his meal system, the Matrix Meal System. Other celebs that were present included appl.de ap (Black Eyed Peas) and Dylan Walsh. (Nip/Tuck, Secretariat) Oh, and did I mention that I randomly saw my brother, Andrew, at the event? LOL.

I had no idea that Fergie would be there, and was just floored with how down-to-earth and kind she was! I mean, we talked for a short period of time, but she was loving the fact that I’m also a blogger and comedienne. Anyway, I’m not a name dropper, but thought that it was to be noted that she was super nice and had zero attitude. Here’s a pic of us, and the lighting is so weird, but whatever!

And just wanted to embed my favorite video from Fergie which is probably ‘Big Girls’ Don’t Cry.’ Simple and soulful. My fave.

Thanksgiving Down South

November 30, 2010 in LA, Life

I had a chance to go visit my boyfriend’s family in Florida for Thanksgiving weekend, and it was such a welcome respite. I actually MISSED humidity which I thought would never happen considering I survived NYC summers filled with humid temperatures and smelly subway cars.

It started here.

The TSA was doing their job, and of course, there were protesters who were handing out these handy pamphlets that reminded us “Don’t Touch My Junk.” Thankfully, my junk remained untouched.

And besides eating the traditional Thanksgiving foods, there was this view. So gorgeous. I felt like I was in ‘The Notebook,’ or something.

Waiting…for my caffeine fix before our flight back. I was thinking, “Dude, how do you run out of tea?”

Sometimes You Gotta Work It

November 21, 2010 in comedy, Karaoke, LA

I work for Myspace Entertainment and also Myspace Karaoke at the moment. We had a karaoke outing not too long ago, and this is what happened. Yup. I rocked out Missy Elliott’s “Work It.” Shout out to Andrea Carpo for taping this..she just sent me this link. I am such a freak, but I’m a fun freak. Woo hoo! Hip Hop Karaoke is so bomb.

Top 5 Ways To Know You’re in Koreatown

November 17, 2010 in comedy, hollywood, LA

Have you ever been in Koreatown or K-town in Los Angeles? If you ever get confused while driving in LA, and you come across the below signs, you may be in K-town.

Streets named after Ivy League Universities- I don’t know what it is about us Korean folk and the love of the Ivies, whether they be Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, University of Pennsylvania, but there is definitely an obsession. This is obviously the perfect reason why there needs to be a street named after an Ivy League University especially for those of us that didn’t get into one. AHEM.

Double Language Signs- No, you’re still in LA. I promise you.  I talk about how Korean names don’t sound good in English in my stand up. Here is Exhibit A.

Driving Ranges in the Middle of the City- Korean Moms/Dads love golf, especially wearing expensive golf gear to go to the local driving range or golf course.

There is a Korean BBQ joint or Karaoke Bar/Club on almost every corner- Korean people love to BBQ.  We love fire-grilling beef, chicken, or pork and wrapping it in crisp lettuce, dipping it in red pepper sauce and devouring every delicious bite.  When I stopped being vegan, this was one of the first things I did: Go to Korean BBQ.  But remember that you will reek of meat when leaving the restaurant.

Places open 24 Hours. This is the norm in NYC, but not so much here in LA. Except in K-Town. Or Swingers on Beverly. It’s a weird, but comforting thought that IF you really want to…you could get a bowl of spicy tofu soup at 4:36 AM. Don’t you agree?
